A national park is a large area, consisting of one or several different types of ecosystems or biomes, where human activities, acquisition or grazing of cattle, hunting, etc., are not allowed in any way. Various types of trees, plants and wildlife reside in these areas. National Parks are established by the Central Government with the aim of providing safe habitats to forests and wildlife.

A. National Parks of India Located in Sikkim and Assam

National Parks of India located in Sikkim and Assam are as follows - 
  1. Khangchendonga (Kanchenjunga) National Park
  2. Kaziranga National Park
  3. Dibru – Saikhowa National Park
  4. Nameri National Park
  5. Manas National Park
  6. Rajiv Gandhi (Orang) National Park

01. Khangchendonga (Kanchenjunga) National Park

  • Declared as a National Park of India in 1977   
  • Located in North Sikkim District , Sikkim. 
  • It is a part of khangchendzonga biosphere reserve.
  • This park is named after Kangchenjunga, the third highest mountain peak in the world.
  • Himalayan goat (Himalayan tahr), snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, Tibetan antelope, wild ass, barking deer, flying squirrel and red panda etc. are habitats in this park.
  • About 550 types of birds are found here.

02. Kaziranga National Park

  • Declared as a National Park of India in 1974 
  • Located in Golaghat and Nagaon district , Assam.
  • Kaziranga National Park was included in UNESCO's world heritage site (International Heritage List) in 1985 and was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006.
  • The Brahmaputra river determines the northern and eastern boundary of this park and during the monsoons the entire park is submerged in water due to the flood brought by this river.
  • One horned rhinoceros can be easily seen here. Two-thirds of the world's total population of rhinos are found here.
  • The tall elephant grass found here is the specialty of this park.
  • The animals here take shelter on Beel and Chapori during floods. Chapori is a high place made of sand brought during floods, while Beel is an artificial lake made of sand reefs.

03. Dibru – Saikhowa National Park

  • Declared as a National Park of India in  1999 
  • Located in Tinsukia district , Assam.
  • It is a part of biosphere reserve.
  • It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1986 and a national park in 1999.
  • This park is bounded by the Brahmaputra river from the north and by the Dibru and Patkai hills of Arunachal Pradesh from the south.
  • Here the park is home to rare and endangered animals and plants. Feral horses, hoolock gibbon, capped langur, water buffalo, dolphin, white winged wood duck, swamp francolin pelican etc. are found.

04. Nameri National Park

  • Declared as a National Park of India in  1998 
  • Located in Sonilpur district , Assam.
  • It is situated in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas.
  • It was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1985 and a National Park in 1998. Tiger Reserve is also located here.
  • It is the abode of white winged wood duck.
  • Here about 300 types of birds including white winged wood duck, hornbill, babbler and batan and elephant, tiger, leopard, sambhar, Asian wild dog, panda, wild boar, bear, black bear etc. are found.

05. Manas National Park

  • Declared as a National Park of India in 1990 
  • Located in Bongaigaon and Barpeta district , Assam.
  • It is situated in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas.
  • It is a biosphere reserve, along with it there are also Tiger Reserve, Elephant Reserve, Wildlife Sanctuary. It is included in UNESCO's world heritage site.
  • This park is named after the Hindu snake goddess Manasa. Along with this, the Manas river also passes through it, which divides it into two parts.
  • Here rare and endangered wild water buffalo, rare golden langur, red panda, one horned rhino, black panther etc. are found.

06. Rajiv Gandhi (Orang) National Park

  • Declared as a National Park of India in 1999 
  • Located in Darrang and Sonitpur district, Assam.
  • It is also called Mini Kaziranga National Park.
  • It is situated on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra river.
  • It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1985 and a national park in 1999.
  • This park is very rich in terms of bio-diversity.

B. National Parks of India Located in Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram

National Parks of India located in Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram are as follows - 
  1. Balpakharam National Park
  2. Nokrek National Park
  3. Clouded Leopard National Park
  4. Rajbari (Bison) National Park
  5. Murlen National Park
  6. Phangpui National Park

01. Balpakharam National Park

  • Declared as a National Park of India in 1985 
  • Located in South Garo Hills District , Meghalaya.
  • It is also called the land of perpetual winds and the land of spirits.
  • Here wild water buffalo, red panda, wild cows, leopard, tiger, deer, golden cat, baboon etc. are found.

02. Nokrek National Park

  • Declared as a National Park of India in 1986 
  • Located in East Garo Hills District , Meghalaya.
  • It is situated in the foothills of the Himalayas in the hills of East Garo.
  • It is a part of Nokrek Biosphere Reserve.
  • Famous Siju cave and Napak lake are located here.
  • Here red panda, Asian elephant, tiger, fishing cat, hoolock gibbon, capped langur, golden cat, pangolin, wild buffalo etc. are found.

03. Clouded Leopard National Park

  • Declared as a National Park of India in 2007 
  • Located in North Tripura District , Tripura.
  • Clouded leopard, langur, wild boar, leopard, jungle fowl, barking deer etc. are found here.

04. Rajbari (Bison) National Park

  • Declared as a National Park of India in  2007 
  • Located in  South Tripura District , Tripura.
  • It is situated in Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Golden langur, bison, deer etc. are found here.

05. Murlen National Park

  • Declared as a National Park of India in  1991 
  • Located in Champai District , Mizoram.
  • This garden is surrounded by six caves.
  • Here hoolock gibbon, himalayan black bear, tiger, leopard, wild boar, sambhar etc. are found.

06. Phangpui National Park

  • Declared as a National Park of India in 1992 
  • Located in Langtalai District , Mizoram. 
  • It is also known as Phangpui Blue Mountain National Park.
  • This park is named after the highest peak of this state, Phangpui, which is also called blue mountain here.
  • The word Phangpui is derived from the Mizo language word Phangpi, which means Fulpui, meaning grassland.

C. National Parks of India located in Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh

National Parks of India located in Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh are as follows - 
  1. Keibul – Lamjao National Park
  2. Intanki National Park
  3. Mouling National Park
  4. Namdapha National Park

01. Keibul – Lamjao National Park

  • Declared as a National Park of India in 1977 .
  • Located in Bishnupur district , Manipur.
  • It is spread in the south-eastern region of Loktak Lake, here is the only floating park in the world.
  • It is the last natural site of Manipur's endangered Bro-Antlered deer (Eld's deer), also known as Sangai in the local language, which means the dancing antelope of Manipur.

02. Intanki National Park

  • Declared as a National Park of India in 1993
  • Located in Peren district , Nagaland.
  • This park is full of dense rain forests.
  • Here creatures like hoolock gibbon, golden langur, tiger, sloth bear, wild dogs, flying squirrel, python etc. are found.

03. Mouling National Park

  • Declared as a National Park of India in 1986 
  • Located in Shiang District , Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The word Mauling is derived from the name of the hill located here.
  • The word mauling also means red blood, which is obtained from the latex of the plant found here.
  • Siyom river passes through this park.

04. Namdapha National Park

  • Declared as a National Park of India in 1983 
  • Located in Changlang District , Arunachal Pradesh.
  • It is situated on the banks of Brahmaputra river, on the border of Myanmar, between Mishmi Hills and Patkai Hills.
  • This park is famous for its rich bio-diversity and large geographical area.
  • The last village of Leesu tribe living in India is located in this park.
  • Evergreen and rain forests are found in this park.
  • Here the endangered snow leopard, clouded leopard, red panda and red fox etc. are found.
