National Parks of India

A national park is a large area, consisting of one or several different types of ecosystems or biomes, where human activities, acquisition or grazing of cattle, hunting, etc., are not allowed in any way. Various types of trees, plants and wildlife reside in these areas. National Parks are established by the Central Government with the aim of providing safe habitats to forests and wildlife.

In this article , we discuss about the national parks located in Goa , Karnataka , kerala and Tamilnadu region under Three sub headings.

A. National Parks of India Located in Goa and Karnataka

Following parks are located in Goa and Karnataka -
  1. Bhagwan Mahavir (Molem) National Park
  2. Anshi National Park
  3. Bandipur National Park
  4. Bannerghatta National Park
  5. Kudremukh National Park
  6. Nagarhole National Park (Rajiv Gandhi National Park)

01. Bhagwan Mahavir (Molem) National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in 1978 
  • Located in Goa.
  • About 200 species of birds are found here, in which Paradise Flycatcher, Hornbill, great Indian hornbill, kingfisher, Indian black woodpeckers, Padki etc. are prominent.
  • Here leopard, gaur, chital, flying squirrel, giant squirrel, civet, sal (pangolin), poisonous snakes etc. are prominent.

02. Anshi National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in 1975 
  • Located in Uttara Kannada District ,Karnataka & spreads through Northern Kannada district of Karnataka near Goa in the Western Ghats range.
  • It is situated on the banks of Kali river.
  • Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary and Kali Tiger Reserve are also attached to it.
  • This area is full of bio-diversity. Black Tiger is the main center of attraction here.

03. Bandipur National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in 1974 
  • Located in Chamrajnagarm ,Karnataka.
  • This is the second major park in India, where the second largest number of tigers reside.
  • This is the largest protected area in South India, where the number of elephants is the highest in South Asia.
  • It is also a part of Nilgiri Biosphere reserve.
  • Tiger, leopard, elephant, drum, gaur, bear, sambhar, chital, sloth bear etc. are found here.

04. Bannerghatta National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in 1974 
  • Located in South Bangalore ,Karnataka.
  • It is a park located in a hilly area, inside which a butterfly fly park, a zoo, an aquarium are located
  • India's first butterfly park is located here.

05. Kudremukh National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in  1987 
  • Located in Chikmagalur District , Karnataka.
  • It is named after a mountain peak located in this region.
  • Kudremukh is a Kannada word, which means - horse's face. That is, the form of this area is like the face of a horse.
  • Teen rivers Tung, Bhadra and Netravathi are located here.

06. Nagarhole National Park (Rajiv Gandhi National Park)

  • Declared as a National Park in  1988 
  • Located in Mysore District ,Karnataka.
  • It is adjacent to the south-west boundary of the Bandipur National Park.
  • This park is also a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which is located in the Western Ghats region.
  • Here teak, rosewood, sandalwood and siver oak, kadam etc. trees and plants and sambhar, chital, tiger, leopard, bear etc. are found.

B. National Parks of India Located in Kerala

Following parks are located in Kerala -
  1. Eravikulam National Park
  2. Silent Valley National Park
  3. Anamudi Shola National Park
  4. Pambadam Shola National Park
  5. Mathiketan Shola National Park
  6. Periyar National Park

01. Eravikulam National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in  1978 
  • Located in Kanan Deva Hills of Western Ghats in Idukki district near ,Kerala.
  • This park is mainly protected for the protection of the endangered mountain goat found here, which is called Nilgiri Tahr here.
  • Every 12 years this area is covered with blue flowers called Neelakurinji flower.

02. Silent Valley National Park 

  • Declared as a National Park in 1984  
  • Located in Palakkad District , Kerala.
  • It is situated between the Nilgiri hills.
  • It was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012.
  • About 1000 types of flowering plants, 110 species of Orchids, 400 types of Moths, 200 types of butterflies and 128 species of Beetles are found here.

03. Anamudi Shola National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in 2003 
  • Located in Idukki District , Kerala.
  • It is surrounded by many gardens and national parks.
  • It is very rich in terms of biodiversity. 
  • About 174 types of herbs and shrubs, 62 types of trees, 40 types of climbers etc. are found here.

04. Pambadam Shola National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in 2003  
  • It is located at a distance of 35 km from Munnar city of Kerala, Kerala.
  • It is the smallest national park in Kerala.
  • 22 types of Plants, 74 types of Herbs & Shrubs and 16 types of Climbers are found here.

05. Mathiketan Shola National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in 2003  
  • Located in Idukki District, Kerala. 
  • Mathiketan is a Tamil word, which means - Mind Confuser, that is, according to the residents there, once one goes to this park, one gets confused between the paths here.
  • This park is mainly a conservation site for elephants.

06. Periyar National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in 1982. 
  • Located in Idukki and Pathanamthitta district ,Kerala.
  • This is a Tiger Reserve Area.
  • Tiger, wild boar, gaur, leopard, elephant and different types of birds are found here.

C. National Parks of India Located in Tamilnadu

Following parks are located in Tamilnadu  -
  1. Guindy National Park
  2. Gulf of Mannar National Park
  3. Indira Gandhi (Annamalai) National Park
  4. Mudumalai National Park
  5. Mukurthi National Park

01. Guindy National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in 1976 
  • Located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
  • It is the smallest national park located on the mainland of India.
  • It is a garden adjacent to the Raj Bhavan of Tamil Nadu, which is located in the middle of the city of Chennai.

02. Gulf of Mannar National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in 1980 
  • It is spread up to a distance of 1-10 km from the east coast of Tamil Nadu in the Indian Ocean ,Tamil Nadu.
  • It is made up of 21 small islands and coral reefs.
  • It is a part of the Gulf of Mannar biosphere reserve.
  • Mangrove forests are also present here.

03. Indira Gandhi (Annamalai) National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in  1989  
  • Located in Coimbatore District , Tamil Nadu.
  • It is a part of Indira Gandhi (Annamalai) Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Annamalai is made up of two words. Anna means elephant and Malai means hills or hills. That is, due to the residence of elephants on the hills, this area was named Annamalai.

04. Mudumalai National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in  1990  
  • Located in Nilgiri District , Tamil Nadu.
  • It is situated in the Nilgiris district in the most western part of Tamil Nadu.
  • Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary is also located here.

05. Mukurthi National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in 1990  
  • Located in Nilgiri District , Tamil Nadu.
  • It is situated in the south-eastern corner of the Nilgiri Plateau region.
  • This park is also a part of the Nilgiri biosphere reserve.
  • This park is mainly protected for NIlgiri tahr (goat species).

Bt Crop Containing Bt Toxin Gene Bt refers to Bacillus thuringiensis i.e. Bt crop contains the amount of toxin obtained from the above bacterium or rather Bt toxin is formed in these crops which is active only when the crop is eaten by insects. In this way, after eating the crop, this toxin becomes active by going into the intestine of the insect and the insect dies.
