National Parks of India - Part 2

Not only India, but all the countries of the world are taking steps in this direction for the protection of forests and wildlife, so that biodiversity can be preserved. We should know that forest and wildlife in India are kept in the Concurrent List under the Indian Constitution. In the context of this, the Ministry of Forest and Environment has also been formed at the central and state level.

A national park is a large area, consisting of one or several different types of ecosystems or biomes, where human activities, acquisition or grazing of cattle, hunting, etc., are not allowed in any way. Various types of trees, plants and wildlife reside in these areas. National Parks are established by the Central Government with the aim of providing safe habitats to forests and wildlife.

Following are the list of National Parks located in India –

A. National Parks of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh

01. Jim Corbett National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in 1936 
  • Located in the foothills of the Kumaon Himalayas, Nainital District (Uttarakhand).
  • Due to playing an important role in the establishment of this park, in the name of Jim Corbett
  • This park was named Jim Corbett National Park.
  • Earlier it was known as Hailey National Park.
  • It is the oldest national park in India.
  • Tiger project is also being implemented here.
  • except Tiger other animanls like elephant, chital, sambhar, nilgai, gharial, cobra, flying fox, langur,Wild boar etc. are found here.
  • There are 488 types of flower trees, 110 types of trees, 580 types of birds, 50 types of mammals and 25 types of reptiles etc. cross.

02. Nanda Devi National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in 1982  
  • Located in Uttarakhand , near at Nanda Devi peak.
  • It is situated at an altitude of 7817 meters above sea level near Nanda Devi peak.
  • It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
  • This Rishi is drained by the Ganges.
  • Valley of flowers can be seen in its north-west.

  • Declared as a National Park in 1982 
  • Located in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. 
  • As it is clear from the name, many types of flower species are found here.
  • Here Himalayan black bear, brown bear, deer, cheetah, fox, blue sheep (Blue sheep) and many species of birds are found.

04. Rajaji National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in1983 
  • Located in Uttarakhand, near North Haridwar.
  • It is spread over three districts of Uttarakhand namely Haridwar, Dehradun and Pauri Garhwal.
  • This is the natural habitat of elephants, as well as a tiger reserve.
  • Sal and Boss plants can be seen here.
  • Apart from mountain goat, many types of birds are found here.

05. Gangotri National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in1989 
  • Located in Uttarkashi district ,Uttarakhand.
  • Angular forests and green grasslands are found here.
  • The Gangotri Glacier from where the river Ganga originates is located in this park.
  • Trees like deodar, fur, pine, oak etc. are found here.
  • Here Blue Sheep, Himalayan Black Bear, Brown Bear, Deer, Himalayan Chicken – Hens, Snow leopard, bulbul, pigeon and many types of animals and birds are found.

06. Govind National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in1990 
  • Located in Uttarkashi district , Uttarakhand.
  • Beautiful snow covered mountain peaks (Black Peak, Bandar Punch, Swarg Rohini) are situated in this park.
  • This park has been selected for the conservation of Snow Leopard (Himalayan Cheetah).
  • Govind Wildlife Sanctuary is also located here, in which different types of animals and birds reside.

07. Dudhwa National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in1977 
  • Located in Lakhimpur Kheri District, Uttar Pradesh.
  • It is situated on the Indo-Nepal border.
  • Tiger Reserve has been established here.
  • Here tiger, rhinoceros, elephant, rhesus monkey, langur, sambhar, deer, chital, wild boar, Tortoise, python, alligator, crocodile etc. are found.
  • Out of 1300 types of birds found here, 450 types of birds are found in this region. Hornbill, woodpecker, paradise flycatcher, etc. are found in these.

B. National Parks of Rajasthan and Gujrat 

National Parks of Rajasthan and Gujrat is as follows - 
  1. Ranthambore National Park
  2. Keoladeo Ghana National Park
  3. Gir National Park
  4. Bansda National Park
  5. Blackbuck (Velavdar) National Park
  6. Rann of Kutch (Marine)

01. Ranthambore National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in1980 
  • Located in Sawai Madhopur district, south-east of Rajasthan , Rajasthan.
  • This garden is surrounded by two rivers Banas and Chambal. In the north of Banas garden And Chambal is located in the south.
  • Kela Devi Wildlife Sanctuary and Sawai Man Singh Wildlife Sanctuary Together tiger protected areas have been made.
  • Banyan trees can mostly be seen in this garden, in whose shade animals rest.
  • Tiger, Chital, Leopard, Sambhar, Nilgai, Wild Boar, Gaur and many types of birds are found here.

02. Keoladeo Ghana National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in 1981 
  • Located in Bharatpur district , Rajasthan.
  • It has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.
  • It is a bird sanctuary. 230 types of rare and extinct species and exotic birds are found here.
  • Siberian cranes, shell ducks, northern pin tails, gagan, pochard, etc. are found here.

03. Gir National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in1975 
  • Located in Junagarh district in Kathiawar Peninsula , Gujarat. 
  • It is also known as Sasan Gir or Gir Van.
  • It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1965.
  • This is a completely protected area.
  • Pure Asiatic lions are found here.
  • Seven rivers flow through this region, including Hiran, Saraswati, Godavari, Machhundri etc.

04. Bansda National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in1979  
  • Located on the river bank of Ambika, Navsari district of Southern Gujarat, Gujrat.
  • A beautiful mix of flora and fauna is found here.
  • Dense trees of bamboo and catechu are found here.
  • There are 440 species of plants, including 110 types of plants, 43 types shrubs, 63 types of vines, 199 herbaceous plants and 25 types of Grasses are found.
  • Tribal castes in this area like – Bhil, Gamit, Warli, Kokani, Kumbi And rioters etc. reside.

05. Blackbuck (Velavdar) National Park

  • Declared as a National Park in1976 
  • Located in Bhavnagar district, Gujarat.
  • It is spread on the southern coast of the Gulf of Khambhat.
  • Black Buck, Tilor, Sohan birds, wolves, 195 species of birds, 95 types of flowers etc. are found here.
  • It is spread between two rivers Parvaliya and Alang.

06. Rann of Kachchh (Marine)

  • Declared as a National Park in1982 
  • It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1980, and declared a national park in 1982.
  • Located in Jamnagar district on the southern coast of Gulf of Kachchh , Gujarat.
  • By the IUCN, it has been placed in the II-class in the Marine Park of the world.
  • There are 42 islands in this region, most of which are found on coral reefs.
  • Various types of aquatic creatures – animals, plants and birds are found here.

India's Deepest River Valley - Bhagirathi and Alaknanda

Bhagirathi  It is a Himalayan river. The Bhagirathi River originates from the 'Gangotri Glacier' near 'Gomukh' located in the Uttarkashi district of the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. This is also called the origin of Ganga, but in this region it is known as Bhagirathi. Bhagirathi goes ahead and meets the Alaknanda river at Dev Prayag.
