A. The longest river of South India – Godavari or Southern Ganga
Godavari or Southern Ganges or Old Ganges
- Godavari is the longest river in South Indian or peninsular rivers, whose length is 1465 km or 910 miles.
- It is the second longest river in India after the Ganges River.
- It originated from the Brahmagiri Mountains on the Western Ghats, Trimbakeshwar, Nashik, Maharashtra (India).
- It flows through Maharashtra, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry.
- Dudhana, Purna, Benganga, Indravati, Sabari, Pranahita, Kadwa etc. rivers join it from the left side.
- Manjira river joins it from the right side.
- Towns like Trimbakeshwar, Nashik, Neded, Ramagundam, Rajahmundry (the largest town situated on the Godavari coast), Gangakhed, Sironcha, Adilabad, Godemgutta, Yanam etc. are located on its banks.
- It flows into the Bay of Bengal near Antarvedi in Andhra Pradesh.
B. The longest river which does not make delta – Narmada and Tapti
Narmada
- The Narmada River is the largest among the rivers that do not form a delta.
- Its length is 1315 km or 817 miles.
- It originates from the Narmada Kund located in the hills of Amarkantak located in Madhya Pradesh (India).
- Sher river, Shakkar river, Duddhi river, Tawa river, Kundi river, Karjan river etc. come from its left side.
- Hiran river, Tendoni river, Maan river, Uri river, etc. rivers come from its right side.
- The cities situated on its banks are Hoshangabad, Jabalpur, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar, Bharuch, Rajpipla etc.
- It flows through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
- Most of the rivers of the Peninsula or South flow from west to east because their main watershed is the Western Ghats, but the Narmada and Tapti rivers flow from east to west.
- They flow through fault lines that are not made by them. For this reason, delta is not formed in these rivers.
- Vindhyachal ranges are situated in its north and Satpura ranges in the south.
- Near Jabalpur, it cuts the marble rocks of Bhedaghat to form the 'Smoky Falls'.
- It joins the Arabian Sea through the Gulf of Khambhat located in Bharuch district of Gujarat state (India).
- Statue of Unity , Longest Statue of the world, is situated on the river bank of Narmada.
Tapti or Tapi
- The length of Tapti river is 724 km or 450 miles.
- This river also flows from east to west.
- It originates from the hills of Satpura situated in Betul district of Madhya Pradesh.
- This river also flows through those rifts which are not made by them. For this reason, delta is not formed in this also.
- This river also flows through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
- Betul, Burhanpur, Bhusaval, Surat, Sindkheda etc. cities are situated on its banks.
- It falls into the Arabian Sea through the Gulf of Khambhat in front of Surat in Gujarat (India).
