Hoisting of The National Flag Along With The Flags of Other Nations
In the earlier articles, we learned that how the national flag is hoisted in schools? What is the correct way to fly the flag? What is the wrong way? What are its misuses? And what is flag salutation? Under this article, we will know that how the national flag is flown along with other flags and at other places? Here other flags mean the flag of another country, the flag of the United Nations or any other flag. The rules relating to the hoisting of the national flag along with the flags of other nations and government buildings have also been mentioned in Part III of the National Flag Code. In this article, we will understand the various rules under the following points, which are as follows –

1. Hoisting of The National Flag With The Flags of Other Nations and With The Flag of The United Nations
- If the national flag is hoisted in a straight line with the flags of other nations, then it should be hoisted on the far right, that is, facing the public, it will be on the right side and when viewed from the eyes of the public, it will be on the left side.
- Flags of other nations in a straight line will be placed after the national flag according to the alphabet of the English language.
- In this way the flag can be placed at the beginning and end of the line, as well as where it naturally occurs in the alphabet.
- The flag should be raised first and lowered last.
- If the flag is to be flown in an open circle (semicircle or circle), the flag will be placed first, followed by other flags in alphabetical order.
- The flags will be placed in the order of the numbers of the clock in the whole circle, so that the last flag comes next to the national flag.
- The national flag should also be kept in its place according to alphabetical order in a closed circle.
- When the national flag and any other flag are flown simultaneously on a wall in a cross form, the national flag will be on the right and its stick will be on the other flag. That is, when viewed from the viewer’s point of view in front, it will remain on the left side.
- When the flag is flown with the flag of the United Nations, it can be on either side of the national flag. According to tradition, it is kept on the far right side.
- When the national flag is flown along with other flags, the flag poles of all the flags will be of equal size. According to international tradition, the flags of all nations are flown at the same height during peace time. Flying a flag above a flag is prohibited.
- The national flag shall not be flown at the same time with any other flag on the same flag pole. There will be different flag poles for different flags.
2. Flag Hoisting on Public Buildings, Government Residences
- Generally, the flag should be hoisted only on the main buildings like Supreme Court, High Courts, Secretariats, Commissioner’s Offices, District Courts, Jail and Offices of District Circle , Municipalities, Zilla Parishads, Offices of the Departmental / Public Sector Undertakings.
- The flag can be hoisted at the customs posts, check posts, outposts and other special and special places of importance in the border areas.
- The flag will also be hoisted at the camps of the border patrol parties.
- When the President, Vice President, Governor or Lieutenant Governor is in their headquarters, the flag should be hoisted at their official residences. The flag hoisted at their official residence should be taken off when the person concerned goes out of the headquarters and on coming back to the headquarters, it should be hoisted again as soon as he enters the main gate of the building.
- The national flag should be hoisted on the building in which the concerned person resides outside the headquarters and the flag should be taken off as soon as he leaves the building.
- Apart from this, the national flag should be hoisted on the building from sunrise to sunset on the occasion of National Days / Festivals / Week or on any special day of national gaiety, Statehood Day, whether the person is in the headquarters or not.
- When an institution is visited by the President, Vice President or Prime Minister, the national flag should be hoisted by that institution in their honor.
- If a foreign elite person is on tour and the President, Vice President or Prime Minister is with that elite person, then during the visit, the national flag should be hoisted along with the flag of the country in the government building he is going to visit.
3. Flag Hoisting On Motor Cars
- The right to fly the flag on motorcars is limited to the following persons –
- President, Vice President
- Governor, Lieutenant Governor,
- Heads of Indian Missions/Posts abroad where they are posted.
- Prime Minister and other cabinet ministers, ministers of state and deputy ministers of the center
- Chief Ministers and Cabinet Ministers and Ministers of State and Deputy Ministers of States and Union Territories
- Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha
- Rajya Sabha Deputy Speaker
- Speakers and Deputy Speakers of Legislative Councils of the States
- Speakers and Deputy Speakers of Legislative Assemblies of States and Union Territories
- Chief Justice of India and other Judges of the Supreme Court
- Chief Justice and other Judges of High Courts.
- When a foreign elite travels in a car provided by the government, the national flag will be flown on the right side of the car and the flag of the country concerned will be flown on the left side of the car.
4. Flag Hoisting on Trains And Planes
- When the President travels by special train within the country, the national flag should be hoisted on the driver’s cabin on the platform side of the station from where the train departs. The flag should be hoisted only when the train has stopped there or is about to reach the place where it is to reach.
- The national flag should be flown on the aircraft of the President, Vice President or Prime Minister while traveling abroad and the flag of the country to which they are traveling should also be flown along with the national flag.
- If the aircraft stops in another country on the way, as a courtesy, the flag of the country where the plane has landed will also be flown.
- When the President is on tour in the country, the national flag will be flown on the side of the aircraft from which the President boarded or landed.
