Generally, there are two types of classification –

  1. Artificial Classification
  2. Natural Classification
Types of Classification

1. Artificial Classification

Classifying organisms on the basis of their one or two or some characteristics is called artificial clasification. It was used by Plani da Elder to classify animals and plants and classified animals and plants as air, water and landforms, while Carolus Linius gave plants. Linnaeus classified the number of reproductive organs of plants into monandria, diandria and polyandria.

Fault

  1. The symptoms used in this show progressive, backward and parallel development. Therefore, such symptoms do not show any natural similarity.
  2. According to this, living beings do not show any kind of development. Some traits in organisms are more developed than their relatives, while in some they appear archaic and underdeveloped.
  3. In this, organisms with different characteristics (such as bats, insects and birds) have been placed in the same class, while organisms with similar characteristics (such as rats, bats and whales) have been kept in different classes.
  4. The symptoms used in this are sometimes affected by the environment and change.
  5. They do not show the natural relationship between the living beings.

2. Natural Classification

  1. The classificatio done on the basis of the characteristics of organisms and their mutual relations with other organisms and environmental conditions is called natural clasification.
  2. It is based on the anatomy, physiology (physiology), physique (histology), cytology and genetics etc. of organisms.
