Topographies Formed By Ocean Water

Topographies Formed By Ocean Water

The Topographies Formed By Ocean Water are exactly the same as the landforms formed by rivers and underground water. The work of erosion by ocean waves is accomplished in five forms. These forms include abrasion, corrosion, abrasion, hydraulic action and wave pressure. The following topographies are formed by them –

1. Coastal Cliffs

The standing sea beach is called the coastal ledge or Bhrigu.

2. Coastal Cave

At those places along the coast, where there are rifts of rocks, faults and weak rocks are present, there is rapid erosion by ocean waves at those places. As a result of this erosion, coastal caves or caves are formed at those places.

3. Sea Arch

The rock located on the beach, whose middle part breaks off, and an arch-shaped structure is formed. are called sea arches.

4. Cave Pillar or Stack

When the roof of the sea arch also breaks down due to sea waves , the walls on either side of the arch stand as pillars . Which is called ocean column or stack.

5. Pulin or Beach

At the places along the seashore, sand, gravel, boulder etc., brought by the waves along with the tidal level and the beach line, get deposited. In this way the structure made of sand, gravel etc. is called Pulin or Beach.

6. Barrier

The ridge formed due to the deposition by sea waves or currents is called a barrier.

  • When it is away from the beach and parallel to it, then it is called offshore barrier.
  • When it is formed around an island, it is called a loop barrier.

7. Connecting Barrier

The barrier connecting the beach to the coast of an island or connecting any two remote beaches is called connecting barrier. The barrier joining an island to the coast is called tombolo.

The saline water of the sea is filled in the middle of the shores connecting any two shores of the sea, due to which a lake is formed. The lake thus formed is called lagoon lake. Chilika Lake in Orissa and Bembanad Lake in Kerala are examples.

8. Coast Line

The boundary line between the beach and the sea shore is called the coast line. Outwards from this line, that is, towards the sea, forms the beach. It can be of many types, the details of which are as follows –

i. Fiord Coast

When glacial highlands submerge under ocean water, forming a steep wall-like coast, it is called a fair coast. eg – Norway’s fjord coast.

ii. Rhea Coast

Riya coast is formed by the submergence of eroded highlands by rivers. These beaches continue to deepen towards the sea.

iii. Dalmatian Coast

The Dalmatian Coast of Yugoslavia |

iv. Haifa Coast or Submerged Lowland Coast

The coast formed by the submergence of low land in the coastal part is called submerged land coast or Haifa coast.

v. Out Beach

The beach formed due to the rise of the landmass or the fall of the sea level is called the released beach.

Landforms Made by Wind Activities

Wind and Its Functions About one-third of the Earth's land area is arid, semi-arid and desert. Lack of humidity and vegetation is often seen in these regions. Due to lack of humidity and vegetation, the soil particles here remain loose. Wind is an important contributor to denudation in these areas. Winds do three types of work in these areas, due to which different types of wind formed topographies are formed. How Blood Donation is Good For Health ? Works of Wind Winds perform three types of functions in arid and semi-arid areas, which are as follows – Deflation Abrasion or Corrasion  Attrition  1. Deflation In this, the unorganized particles of the soil are blown away by the wind, as a result of which the trough is formed. Lag Deposits and Marukuttim (Desert Pavement) When the wind carries away the small particles of the soil by the process of ablation, then the bigger particles are left behind. These large particles are called Lag Deposits and the surfaces formed as a result of w
