We often hoist the national flag on national festivals / national days and other occasions, but have you ever tried to know what is the proper way to hoist the national flag? And in this you are not misusing it in the name of hoisting the flag? The rules relating to proper way to hoist the national flag by the Central and State Governments and their organizations/agencies have been mentioned in Part III of the National Flag Code. Before this article, we have learned about the rules for hoisting the national flag in schools under Section 1 of Part II. The rules related to hoisting the flag properly are described in Part III, whose sections are as follows –

There are various rules relating to proper way to hoist the national flag under these sections, which we will study in this article –
Section 1 : Rules for the Heads of Defense Establishments, Missions and Posts
- Its provisions will be applicable to those defense establishments such as Army, Navy, Air Force etc. and their units, which have their own rules for unfurling the national flag.
- The National Flag can be flown at the Headquarters and residences of the Heads of Missions/Posts abroad, where it is customary to fly the Flag at Diplomatic and Consular Headquarters and Government Residences.
Section 2 : Official Hoisting of the Flag
- It is mandatory for all Government and their organizations/agencies to comply with the provisions given in this part other than the Defense establishments mentioned in Section I above.
- When the flag is flown officially, only that flag shall be used, which conforms to the specifications prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards and bears the standard symbol of the Bureau.

Section 3 : Correct Way of Hoisting The Flag
- The flag should be placed at a respectable place and placed at such a place, from where it is clearly visible.
- The flag should be flown on all the days including Sundays and holidays on the public building on which it is customary to put the flag. This flag should be flown from sunrise to sunset, no matter what the weather. On some special occasions the flag can be flown on such buildings even at night.
- The flag will always be flown up high and lowered slowly and respectfully. If the trumpet is played while raising and lowering the flag, it should be raised and lowered at the same time as the sound of the trumpet.
- If the flag is flown horizontally or diagonally in the front of the building or on the balcony or on the window, the saffron colored side of the flag will be towards the end which is farthest from the balcony/balcony or front side of the window.
- When the flag is hoisted on the wall with the help of the pedestal and crooked, then the saffron part will be at the top. And when it is hoisted standing tall, then the saffron part will be on the right side of the flag i.e. on the left side when viewed from the front.
- If the flag is to be hoisted on the meeting stage, then it should be hoisted in such a way that it is on the right side of the speaker, that is, when viewed from the audience, it will be on the left of the audience.
- On occasions like the unveiling of a statue or monument, the flag will be flown with significance and separately.
- If the flag is flown alone on a motorcar, it will be flown on a pole mounted tightly to the right in front of the car.
- While being taken in a procession/parade, the flag shall be on the right side of the procession/parade. If the procession/parade consists of a row made up of other flags, the national flag will be ahead of the space in the middle of that row.

Section 4 : Wrongful Hoisting of The Flag
- Torn or scuffed flag shall not be flown.
- The flag shall not be lowered to salute any person or thing.
- No other flag or ensign should be flown above or below the national flag. Also, no other object, such as flowers-garlands or other insignia, shall be placed on the flag pole.
- The flag shall not be used for making tapes, flags or any kind of decoration.
- The flag shall not be used as a speaker’s desk cover or to cover the speaker’s stage from above.
- The ‘saffron part’ of the flag will not be flown with the face down.
- The flag should not be allowed to touch the ground or floor or touch the water.
- The flag should not be tied in such a way as to damage it.

Section 5 : Misuse of Flag
- The flag shall not be used for draping in any form other than the funeral rites performed by the State/Army/Central Paramilitary Forces.
- The flag shall not be wrapped around the hood, head, side or rear of any train, train or boat.
- The flag should not be used/kept in such a way that it gets spoiled or soiled.
- When the flag is torn or mixed, it should not be thrown away. Rather it should be disposed of with respect. The flag should be destroyed completely in solitude. For this it should be burnt or other methods should be adopted.
- The flag shall not be used to cover any building.
- The flag should not be used in any form of dress, uniform or as part of it. The flag will not be brought by embroidery or printing on the gamchha, handkerchief, napkin etc.
- No letters will be written on the flag.
- The flag will not be used for any advertisement. There will be no advertisement on flag penalty also.
- The flag shall not be used for holding, carrying or receiving and giving any object.
- On special occasions and national days / festivals, rose petals can be hoisted in it, on which there will be no objection.

Section 6 : Salutation of The Flag
While hoisting the flag and bringing it down or while taking the flag in parade or on any occasion of inspection, all the people present there shall keep their faces towards the flag and shall remain in a cautious posture.
When the flag is in motion, the people in the queue will stand in a careful posture and will greet the flag when it passes by.
